Server hosting, backup and storage services include a variety of file and data backup solutions available to university faculty, staff and students. Other services include setup and centralized hosting of both physical and virtual servers. Fees may apply for some services.

Server Options

OIT provides an enterprise level backup service for backup of data on OIT-operated community file servers. OIT offers hosting services for physical and virtual servers.

Physical servers can be backed up by installation of an Enterprise Backup agent. The agent allows for remote administration and backup of the server's data. This service includes up to 100 gigabytes of backup storage for each virtual server. The customer is charged only when storage exceeds the initial 100 GB.

Data center servers are for rack hosting. Groups are able to reserve an entire rack for their own use. This service includes space, power, and a network connection only. 

File Server

Any person with a university login and SpeedType may request a billable home or departmental network folder. Please provide the information below in your request.

Information required to create a billable departmental folder:

  • Folder name (less than 15 characters, no spaces or special characters)
  • SpeedType for the data stored in the folder ($0.025 per GB per month)
  • An email address for a primary point of contact person (someone you’d go to if you
  • had an unexpected access request for this folder)
  • List of email addresses for users who need modify (read + write) access (copy\paste from Outlook TO field)
  • (Optional) List of email addresses for those who need read-only access

Information required to create a billable home folder:

  • Email address of home folder user
  • SpeedType for the data stored in the folder ($0.025 per GB per month)

Server Hosting - Physical and Virtual

Physical departmental servers are hosted in data centers on the CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus. These data centers feature redundant power, cooling, and secure data center access. Services included in the cost are rack space, network connectivity, system administration, proactive monitoring, and monthly operating system patching.

Virtual servers are offered as an alternative to physical servers. They function as an independent server on a single physical server and in many cases are more cost effective than physical servers. Services included in the cost are physical redundancy, system administration, network connectivity, proactive monitoring, and monthly operating system patching. Additional storage, processors, and RAM, beyond what is included in the default configuration can be requested.

Storage Options

Departments are provided with 100 GB of storage, 1 processor, and 4 GB of RAM on the initial server configuration.  Additional server storage is charged at $0.05/GB per month. If your department or Center requires storage in addition to what is already provided, you are able to purchase that additional storage for a monthly rate. 

Faculty and staff are provided with 4GB of basic storage, typically via a home or departmental shared drive. Additional storage is available for a fee. In addition, 1TB of cloud storage is provided through OneDrive for Business.
