Driving Inclusive Innovation
Inside the CIDE Human Factors Testing Lab
Elizabeth Coughanour Sep 15, 2024At the Center for Inclusive Design and Engineering (CIDE) Human Factors Testing Lab, innovative technology is being tested and developed, often with our industry partners, to advance inclusiving through innovative assistive technology solutions. Located within the Anschutz Medical Campus, this facility plays a key role in advancing assistive, mainstream and medical technologies that address real-world needs for persons living with or aging into disability.
Advancing Human-Centered Innovation
The lab is equipped with the latest technology, from 3D printers producing customized components to power wheelchairs undergoing re-engineering. These innovations are designed to address a wide range of challenges, from mobility limitations to communication barriers, ensuring that each solution is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals.
A notable feature of the lab is the mock studio apartment, complete with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and office, where researchers evaluate usability and functionality of of technologies. This space allows for testing and refining devices, ensuring they function effectively in real-world scenarios. By replicating the conditions users may face, researchers are better able to create solutions that are practical and impactful.
Fostering the Next Gernation of STEM Leaders
Recognizing the importance of cultivating a pipeline of future innovators, CIDE actively engages students through immersive experiences. During a recent visit, students from Rock Canyon High School had the opportunity to explore the lab and engage with CIDE’s researchers and engineers. The students participated in hands-on demonstrations, experimenting with assistive technologies for visual impairments and adaptive gaming.
Through initiatives like these, CIDE not only inspires the next wave of professionals but also emphasizes the critical role of inclusion in innovation. By providing opportunities to engage with transformative technologies, the lab contributes to a future workforce dedicated to improving accessibility for all.
Partnering for Impactful Change
The work being done at CIDE goes far beyond technological development—it is about creating solutions that change lives. The Human Factors Testing Lab fosters a culture of collaboration, where industry, researchers, engineers, and community members come together to design with inclusivity in mind. By combining expertise and insights, CIDE fosters solutions that benefit not just individuals with disabilities but also creates scalable solutions for emerging markets.
Recent projects have included collaborations to refine power wheelchair designs, develop cutting-edge visual navigation tools, and optimize adaptive gaming interfaces. These efforts showcase the lab’s ability to translate research into actionable outcomes with measurable impact, strengthening its reputation as a leader in the field.
