Improving Accessibility for GED Test Prep
Accessibility Consulting Makes Testing Services more Inclusive
Jim Sandstrum Aug 15, 2024For many adults seeking better opportunities, the GED (General Educational Development) high school equivalency test represents an opportunity to unlock new career paths in their communities. Ensuring test prep tools and resources are accessible allows everyone to participate.
GED Testing Services recently partnered with CIDE to improve the accessibility of its GED & Me app and the GED Ready exam. These tools helps test takers prepare for and pass the official GED test. The GED & Me app provides personalized guidance, study support, and practice questions to help people prepare for the test, while GED Ready gives test takers an opportunity to experience a scaled-down, practice version of the full exam. These resources are essential for anyone hoping to take the GED.
The collaboration included accessibility consulting on all four GED subject areas: math, science, social studies, and language arts. CIDE worked closely with subject matter experts from GED Testing Services to craft detailed alternative text descriptions for visual elements such as equations, charts, graphs, diagrams, illustrations, and images. This work enables test-takers with low or no vision to access the same information as sighted individuals.
Improving the Entire Testing Experience for All Users
The team at CIDE also offered accessibility recommendations spanning the entire testing experience, from the digital platform's user interface to question presentation and supporting documentation. Combined, these efforts create a more equitable testing experience and expand opportunities for adults pursuing careers that require high school equivalency credentials.
